A Quick Update - A Pretty Big Mistake

Under Debt By Dave

Things have not been going so well. I am still alive of course but I have practically nothing in my emergency fund right now. I made the huge mistake that I will not be making again…

I got paid a pretty decent bonus last month. As a result of online banking, I paid off what I was supposed to pay off on one of my loans. I saw that I had a decent amount left over and put more off it. Seeing the balance go down was like being on crack (not that I’ve ever tried crack!). I paid off more and more until I pretty much had no money left.

3 weeks later and I am literally living on packet noodles and water. No joke.

It was also my birthday last week. Thank god I got two gifts. Cards with money in them to keep me going. :)

I get paid on Friday, so I just have to hang in there. I don’t like living like this. I paid off a huge lump of debt so I guess that’s a good thing. Once I get through the next couple of weeks I think I will be in better shape. I learned a huge lesson this month. Only pay off what you can afford. Living expenses are priority!

With that said, I think I am well due a decent update on this blog! I was thinking about a video post. Would that appeal to anyone or just me? ;) Watch this space.

I’ve been there before - not a big fan of living on noodles and water, but they’ll due to keep you alive! :)

Been there, done that.. Many years ago when I was young a foolish I lived on $15 for food one week. peanuts carrots and potatoes. I describe that as more zeal than brains.

Well a good of solid noodles will build money wisdom, that’s for sure.!!

I think we’ve all been there, and no, it’s not fun. Do what you have to do, of course, but do what you have to do to never be there again!

Good advice, too! Paying off debt is great financially, and it can feel goooood. But it’s not smart to do at the expense of living expenses, or at the expense of your quality of life. That’s a good reminder (and one you’ll likely not forget anytime soon).

Oh, and here’s a nudge on the video post… I think it’d be good, so get it going!

    Thanks!

Add me to the ‘been there, done that’ list! I still do it. I confess I’m a sucker for paying off debt. I’ll eat ramen noodles for a week if I get to pay off a debt, it’s worth that much to me. But I know what you mean, it’s scary. Congrats though! You are a couple of dollars closer to freedom!

Hey it could have been worse. At least the cash was going in the right direction and not on some wasteful items. The advice about paying off only what you can afford is good. If you were to live as a pauper while trying to pay off your debt you would get demotivated very quickly.

I am there with you. I too live on package noodles and water (and instant decaf coffee) which is all I had left.

I’m still plugging away and am learning financial management, investing and most of all, trusting God.

There is a general rule of emergency savings fund:
The size of your fund should be equal to at least three months’ worth of your living expenses. Take note that it’s three months’ expenses, not three months of your pay.
